The Mesa Arts Center is a grand proscenium theater boasting 1,600 seats located on the Orchestra, Dress Circle, Parterre, Mezzanine and Balcony levels. Designed for large-scale performances, the Ikeda Theater hosts Broadway theater, symphony orchestra concerts, classical ballet and pop shows. It offers variable acoustics designed to enhance each type of performance. Rich, warm copper on angled, articulated wall panels and an inky blue ceiling reflect the feel of a desert canyon. Embedded lights in the walls change colors, enhancing the ambiance, while wood balconies and flooring give the theatre its intimate feel.
History of Mesa Arts Center
Mesa Arts Center is the culmination of more than a century of support for arts and art education in the Mesa area, and the result of more than six years of planning and design involving hundreds of members of the community.
The first cultural programming in Mesa was housed in the Art Barn in the 1970's. In 1980, the city acquired the Irving School at 155 N. Center Street and moved existing cultural programs and staff into that facility, built during the Works Progress Administration of the 1930's. It was then known as the Mesa Activity Center. Programs grew and staff was added, the name was changed to Mesa Arts Center, and over one million people were served before the facility closed in Fall 2004. Existing staff and programming were moved to the new Mesa Arts Center during early 2005. Mesa Contemporary Arts opened in April 2005 followed by the first class session in June, and the theaters opened in September. Click Here to get more info on the history of the Mesa Arts Center.
